A friend from Arizona once commented to me that she missed home because the landscape out west was very male while the landscape in the southeast was very female. I had traveled in the west so I understood that she was speaking of flat land and straight lines as opposed to rolling hills and curves. At least I thought I understood at the time...

Several years ago a horrible accident forced me to slow down. I was on crutches for half a year and had more than enough time to reflect on different aspects of my life and work. It was only then that I truly came to understand her statement and process information that had been with me all my life and bring it to my pots.

I began to notice the belly-like hills and sensual textures that had surrounded me, growing up in a farming community. Raked hay, plowed fields and graceful curvy roads took on a new visual meaning from her analogy that made other elements of my work and life make sense.

For the last ten years I have fired my pots primarily in wood kilns. There is an insane amount of work involved in this process of firing and there are many easier processes of finishing work. I am attracted to spontaneous ash deposits, flashing, and the beauty of naked clay exposed to raw flame. The mystery of unpredictable surfaces on the work intrigues me. I enjoy being physically involved in the firing process, not just doing passive turn-ups on a gas or electric kiln. I even like spending days cutting, hauling and stacking wood. They are as comfortable and familiar to me as the long, hot days I spent as a child working in my dad's tobacco and hay fields. I realized this is one of the reasons I'm so attracted to wood firing. There is an honesty and purity in intense physical labor directed toward an ultimate goal. This is the spirit I want my work to exhibit.

Although many aspects of my pots have changed, the one thing that has remained constant is my adamancy about making utilitarian pots. I've always had an immense respect for the history and tradition, required mastery of skill and intimate relationship with the user, commanded by functional pots. The exploration of the epiphany inspired by my friend's statement changed my considerations in making pots to still include, but go beyond, how a rim feels against the lips or takes the blow of a spoon. I began to look at the work in more sculptural terms.

Historically, my pots have always involved the rituals of food presentation and storage. I began to make vases that were more concerned with surface textures and relationships of forms that were directly inspired by the lush femaleness of Kentucky's farm land. I also began to make utilitarian forms that stack when not in use to form blossom-like sculptural objects. The textures on cut jars came to look like tobacco leaves. The straight lines in the liquor sets are reminiscent of the vertical planks in barns juxtaposed against the sensual curves of hills. It seemed that images from my past had begun to trickle into my work like Marc Chagall' s painting "I and the Village."

I was an anomaly in graduate school because of my background (I once had a professor on my committee ask to look at my hands to acknowledge that I had callouses from working). I was also an anomaly to my family and friends in rural Kentucky because I had become a serious, academic artist. The darkest year of my life after the accident brought an illumination that merged these two worlds in my pots. The clarity is inspiring. My work now not only reflects my sensibilities as an artist, but my own personal history as well.
