Summer Hum, Artist Statement October 2012 - This was the first year in a while that my neighborhood enjoyed summer nights with insect sounds. I don't know why, but something brought the crickets back to Somerville and made us feel like it was country living. I spent as much time as I could putting around my urban garden, listening to the summer humming with birds and bees, observing the quiet work of the slugs, snails, and snakes that live there. We are keeping honeybees again, so the bees and I went about our daily business side by side and I realized how much I had missed their company. Of course their beautiful comb pattern worked its way into my work - perfect for jars and dessert plates. I continue to draw upon these immediate surroundings, looking to garden life as source material for drawings and patterns.

All of the work is made from white stoneware clay using forming technique which include wheel-throwing, slab-building and the use of plaster molds. I like to choose a simple clean form, with soft corners and planes for experimentation with line drawing, texture, color, and pattern development. The surfaces are created by stamping, incising and carving, and brushing, stenciling, trailing and inlaying color slips. I enjoy using a limited group of glaze and underglaze materials with different application methods and layering them to achieve a wide variety of results. All pieces are oxidation fired to cone 6.
