In this day of high technology, we need to touch and use things that have been made by other humans. The connection with the maker is something that is missing in factory produced wares. I gear my pottery to satify the needs of kitchen and table, restricting myself to producing a limited range of forms that are continually refined. Some refinements come from observations made in daily use of my pottery in my own home. Others come from working repeatedly with similar forms over the years. As a functionalist in the tradition of Bernard Lerach, I view the making of pottery that flows from my soul the ultimate achievement.

Each activity that I take part in is of no more or less value to me than one breath is more lifegiving than another. Although my exhibitions, lectures, and workshops keep me away from the studio, they are valuable in my development as an artist. My expections for my work and myself are continually elevated. I'm my own worst critic.

CRAFTSMAN'S STATEMENT
Elmer Taylor was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After earning his Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Arizona State University Tempe, Arizona, Taylor went to England to apprentice with Master Potter Michael Leach. Upon his return to the United States, he taught at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia for two years before coming to teach at the University of North Texas, in 1974. He now teaches Ceramics as Regents Professor of Art at U.N.T.
Taylor `s attitude toward ceramics is best expressed in his own words:
I gear my pottery to satisfy the needs of kitchen and table, restricting myself to producing a limited range of forms that are continually refined. Some refinements come from observations made in the daily use of the pottery in my own home. Others come from repeatedly working with similar forms over a period of years.
My goal is not to make pots but to allow them to grow from the interaction between the qualities inherent in clay as a material and my skill as a craftsman. It is my hope that the pots I produce, honors those potters whom came before me, and inspire those who come after me.
