I enjoy the contrast of hand-drawn images vs the graphic (printed) quality of commercial open stock decals. The imagery is often influenced by a Meissen charger, circa 1740-45, that depicts a juxtaposition of three completely unrelated subject matters, a central battle scene, surrounded with floral and insect images, capped by bucolic landscape and architecture vignettes around the rim. My work is a combination of commercial and handmade/handcolored decals that tries to emulate the Meissen charger in spirit.

"Rimas VisGirda began his academic career in science, earning a degree in physics from California State University at Sacramento. He later received a Master of Arts in Art degree from the same university, and completed a Master of Fine Arts in ceramics and sculpture at Washington State University. He has taught at colleges and universities on the west coast and in the Midwest since 1973. His work addresses common issues in contemporary society; experiences and emotions that we all experience on our journey through life. He examines the mundane and commonplace and present the viewer with a pictorial image that we can all relate to, sometimes positive and sometimes negative depending on the viewer's own personal experiences. His work allows us to examine and see our life and the culture we live in through eye slanted with wit and humor."
- Judith Schwartz

In 1988 he visited the Soviet Union as a guest of the USSR Union of Artists and has participated in a number of symposia in Eastern Europe during the ensuing years. These experiences have started to manifest themselves in his work.

He retired from full-time teaching in 1997 and currently resides in scenic Champaign, Illinois where he collects fortune-telling cups, is a home-dad for six year old Tadas and three year old Jonas, and tries to maintain a studio.
