CHEEK, STEVEN
GEORGIA
It has always been my goal as an artist to make work that speaks to the viewer on a deeper level. As a functional potter it is always my greatest compliment to hear that someone uses my pots in their daily life; I believe that this tactile experience creates a dialogue between the user and the maker that continues and matures over a lifetime of use. As my work evolves to be less functional in the traditional sense, it is still my interest to provoke a dialogue with the viewer. In my current body of work, I am exploring carving appropriated images from our culture onto the surface of my pots that I feel address or allude to specific ideals that interest me. It is my hope that these images will provoke thought in the viewer.

This body of work is a step in my ongoing growth toward a personal and unique approach to clay. It is my goal to address people’s ideals and thoughts about what is beautiful and to try and encourage the viewer to investigate and hopefully question or think about issues that are taking place all around us. This work is dealing with a loss of innocence on a personal level and on a wider societal level as well. By working in porcelain and using traditional celadons, it is my hope to marry the beautiful vessel with imagery that subtly informs or confronts the viewer to think about a larger issue. The issues that I am most interested in are war, death and man’s inhumanity to man and our response to these events. I am also interested in how we treat the world that we live in. I hope to discuss the larger issue of death, not only in a physical sense, but also in a more metaphysical sense as well.

It is my goal to raise several questions; how do we mark or mourn the passing of lost ideals? How are we as a society going to leave our mark on the world? Are we going to leave the world a better place? Will we learn from the mistakes of those that came before us?
